In an unsuccessful attempt to find some late Great Gray Owls and/or some early Red-winged Blackbirds this morning, I instead happened upon a small flock of 7 Pine Grosbeaks feeding by the roadside on Bathurst Street north of the Queensville Sdrd. (about 150 metres south of Hochreiter Road, to be more specific). The birds I observed were all adult females, feeding on berries on both sides of the road, sometimes coming down to land at the roadside for roughage. Holland Landing is just north of Newmarket, which, in turn, is halfway between Toronto and Barrie between Hwys. 400 and 404. Bathurst does not run all the way through Newmarket; it stops north of Green Lane then continues again later on the northeast side of the Bradford Road. The most direct way to get to Bathurst St. North is to run the gauntlet of steady traffic by travelling north through the heart of Newmarket along Yonge Street. Keep going PAST the Holland Landing turn-off and take the long curving stretch that continues toward the town of Bradford. At the next stop light the sign shows Bathurst Street. Turn right and a quick left; Bathurst then crosses the railway tracks and straightens out northward.
