I'm not sure when they are supposed to be heading back north to breed (read an
article in the Montreal Gazette on the Great Gray Owl where someone mentioned
the Great Grays down here are expected to be around for a few more weeks).
Here is the link....an interesting read.

The Great Grays are still in the usual places around the Ottawa area. I saw a
few on March Valley Road early in the day. They were out despite the snowy
weather. Saw one on Thomas A. Dolan (just off Dunrobin road) near Fifth
Line/Greenland intersection. This Great Gray was very active flying around.
Didn't see it catch anything but it was definitely alert and listening for
prey. Spotted two near the corner of Kilmaur and Dunrobin in the early
afternoon. The same two were in the area again later in the day. There may be
more in the same area from what someone told me but I just saw the two.

A lousy morning spotting owls - probably due to the weather out here - cold,
windy, and some snow! Spotted a Barred Owl at Lynde Shores in Whitby around
10am in the back east corner of the lot. He was just puffed out and content to
sleep - small wonder though with all the traffic that has travelled through
there lately by the looks of it. Unfortunately some sections of the main feeder
trail through Lynde now look like a complete maze with tracks and trails that
go everywhere - unlike up to a week ago where most of the snow was still
undisturbed (save for a few foot tracks.) Some areas - like where the Barred
was were totally flattened with foot traffic. Looks like in our quest to see a
fantastic owl we have forgotten to pay the proper respect to the habitat and
the wildlife that live there.

I checked out Shoal Point Rd. at about 5pm and spotted a Great Gray perched on
a tree branch at the side of the road. Lots of traffic on this road so be more
careful here as well - not like the quiet of Halls Rd.

Lynde Shores - take Salem Rd. south from 401 to Bayly (Victoria), go left on
Bayly past Lakeridge Rd. and continue until you see Lynde on South side of
road.

Shoal Point Rd. - take Salem Rd. south from 401 to Bayly, go left on Bayly to
Shoal Pt. and take right
