Hi all,

What a glorious sunny day for birding. I got a late start but ended up at Halls
Rd. around 12noon and it was pretty quiet. As I sat on the North Feeder trail
waiting for the Ring Necked Pheasant to come out from under the evergreen, the
Barred Owl showed his face. He just suddenly popped out of the evergreens on
the South side of the trail and sat on a branch for a minute before trying to
take a mourning dove. Several people were able to witness a nice display as the
Barred was very active in his search for food. No sooner had he missed the
Dove, he listened and watched intently at the ground and the sky and flew off
to another branch. At no time over a span of 15 minutes or so did he relax. He
came out close to the road and took off right over us a couple of times to
perch on another branch. I didn't see him catch anything but I'm sure those who
stuck around might have seen something because he looked like he was on a
serious mission for food.

After the Barred showed up, the Pheasant flattened himself as low to the ground
as he could under the tree - before that he was up and alert. (I understand he
has had a close call with the Barred before). We also saw the little Mink? from
the hollow tree a couple of times and what appeared to be a pair of Red Tails
Hawks.
