Hi everyone. Early this morning, there were a lot of gulls present at Wheatley
Harbour, and patience paid off as I scrutinized them carefully. On the
breakwall around 8:30 a.m. I found a first winter Thayer's Gull, its plumage
looking more like first summer; a first winter Lesser Black-backed Gull; and a
very challenging first winter bird that looked very much like a Glaucous, but
that I eventually determined was probably a "Nelson's" Gull -- hybrid of
Glaucous and Herring. Although I was not able to see it with wings spread to
check for the tell-tale pale inner primaries, the bird appeared too small and
thin-billed to be a first-winter Glaucous. It was too big and long-billed to be
an Iceland Gull. I even considered the possibility of albino Herring, but it
didn't seem white enough, and did have some buff spotting. Never saw a gull
quite like it before.

Wheatley Harbour can be reached by taking Erie Street south from Talbot Road in
Wheatley.

This afternoon, at about 3:30 p.m., I found a meadowlark in the DeLaurier Trail
parking lot that looked like a strong candidate for Western. I viewed it from
about 35 metres away as it foraged on the ground. It had very pronounced white
on the flanks all the way down to the lower belly and undertail coverts,
looking identical to Sibley's portrait, with more of what I would call thick
spots rather than streaks. The bird was repeatedly splaying its outer tail
feathers, as if nervous, and it was clear that the white was virtually limited
to these two outermost feathers only. When the bird flew to land on a
fencepost, and then again when it flew off to the Red Cedar Savannah, it was
just as apparent that there was no extensive white in the tail at all.
Unfortunately, it did not vocalize, so I can't say for sure that it was a
Western, but hopefully it will hang around for someone else to find tomorrow.
In any case, my first meadowlark of the year, long overdue.

Hello again. Yep, it was one of those days, with a lot of luck on my side. An
early morning visit to Hillman Marsh yielded a wide variety of waterfowl, but
nothing remarkable. However, we (my brother Robert and I) returned late in the
afternoon and quickly found a beautiful male Eurasian Wigeon along with the
hundreds of other ducks in the shorebird impoundment. I believe we finished
with 20 waterfowl species in the Pelee area for the day.

Hillman Marsh can be reached by taking Oak Street east from Leamington, or
County Rd 37 south from County Rd 34 between Leamington and Wheatley.

Good birding!

Hi Owl Prowlers,

I had the privilege of sighting a GGO Thursday mid morning on
Metcalfe/Concession Rd. just south west of Newtonville. He was perched on
top of a fence post long enough for me to go home and get my camera.

Directions: Take the Newtonville Rd. exit south off # 401 till you get to
Metcalfe/Concession Rd. just west of Bellamy, a no exit road to the south.
