One afternoon at Cartwright Point, a subadult Bald Eagle was perching in the top of a big pine tree! Along the Cataraqui River yesterday, by Belle Park, I saw two adult and one first-winter Bald Eagles, a Red-tailed Hawk, about 50 Hooded Mergansers, a male Redhead, close to a hundred Ring-necked Ducks, a few Buffleheads and two male Red-winged Blackbirds. By the Kingston Mills Locks, a Cooper's Hawk was doing his display flight. Driving up Highway 15 past Seeley's Bay and back down towards Kingston past Jones Falls and Sunbury, I saw three Great Gray Owls, 10+ Red-tailed hawks, two flocks of Wild Turkeys in the same field numbering at least 25 birds and numerous flocks and singing males of Red-winged Blackbirds. Today, I birded the eastern part of Amherst Island with great success. I had several new arrivals, such as a Killdeer, three Turkey Vultures, a Northern Flicker, and a pair of Wood Ducks resting on the ice off the southern shore. Other interesting sightings, I can mention, two Mute Swans, 25-30 Ring-necked Ducks, 10 Hooded Mergansers, an adult Golden Eagle soaring low over Owl Woods, three female/juvenile Northern Harriers, four Rough-legged Hawks (two dark-morph), 10 Red-tailed Hawks, an American Kestrel, two Boreal Owls in the Cedar woodlots past the Owl Woods feeder, three horned larks, two singing Song Sparrows, only three Am. Tree Sparrows (singing along the roads, not in the Owl Woods!), and plenty of Red-winged Blackbirds and Am. Robins. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Road 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower Forty Foot Road. To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the four-way stop sign by the general store and drive 3.4 kilometres along Front Road to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot Road. Marshall Forty-Foot Road is across the road from house #2320. Drive along Marshall Road to the mid-way point, where there is an "S" in the road (1.2 kilometres, look for the K.F.N. kiosk). Park in the gravel lane or off the road edge. The road is closed due to snow drifting so you might have to make the 1km or so walk in. The chickadees can be hand fed. Directions to Cartwright Point - Ontario Road Atlas, MapArt Publishing [P36, D56] Cartwright Point is off highway 2, east of Kingston. Take Hwy. 15 south to the end and turn left (east) on Hwy. 2 and drive to the second set of traffic lights (1.5km.).
