Hi,
Late Thursday afternoon Margaret spotted a Tree Swallow flying over a
pasture along #121 about two kilometres northeast of the hamlet of Burnt River
in the northern part of the former Victoria County. This is let than 10
kilometres south of the southern boundary of Haliburton County. In the same
area there was a constant flight of Great Blue Herons, singles and small
groups, flying northeast.
This morning, a number of Fox Sparrows were singing constantly in our back
yard in Thickson's Woods.

To reach Thickson's Woods, Exit #401 at Thickson Rd. in Whitby; go south about
1.5 kilometres to the Waterfront Trail. Park on the east side of Thickson Road
and walk east along the Waterfront Trail abouit 200 metres where a trail enters
the woods on the right. To reach our house follow the pathways south through
the woods to where a laneway leads to the roadway along the bluff overlooking
Lake Ontario.

With the forecast of an excellent hawk flight for yesterday (Thursday) at
Derby Hill, New York, we weren't disappointed seeing 1533 migrating
raptors. Derby Hill is located at the southeast corner of Lake Ontario.
It's our favourite and perhaps the finest spring hawkwatch site in eastern
North America. Yesterday's southeast winds kept the hawks low along the
shoreline giving the best close views of hawks, including 11 Golden Eagles,
we've had in years. Most of the hawks passing by Derby Hill are going to
Ontario and Quebec. When we arrived on Wednesday afternoon, we saw several
large flocks of white morph Greater Snow Geese, presumably heading for
eastern Ontario. Below we've pasted in yesterday's hawk flight because
Ontario birders may want to visit Derby Hill. For directions, see website
below.

Happy hawkwatching,

Jean Iron and Ron Pittaway
Toronto and Minden
