OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - APR 01 2005 AT 6:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A dramatic change has occurred on the Ottawa birding scene over
the past 2 days, with the floodwaters in the Bear Brook, Cobb's
Lake Creek and South Nation River areas nearly at their peak today
April 1st., bringing in a flood of migrants.

Today, approx. 65 Greater Snow Geese were along Frank Kenney Rd.
and at least 4,000 mainly adult Greater Snow's were along Russell
Rd. east of Bourget. Flocks of Snow Geese were also reported from
farther east near St-Isidore on the 31st. Multiple 1000's of
Canada Geese were in the air and in the fields in both the Bear
Brook and Cobb's Lake Creek area, along with many Green-winged
Teal, 100's of Northern Pintails and small numbers of Ring-necked
Ducks. Increased numbers of Wood Ducks, Turkey Vultures, Northern
Harriers, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks and American Kestrels
have been noted over the past 3 days in various locations, and
Killdeers are now widespread as well.

Other firsts of the season were a Pied-billed Grebe in the channel
at Britannia on March 28th, an American Wigeon and a Golden-
crowned Kinglet at Britannia on the 31st, a pair of Sandhill
Cranes flying over the fields west of Milton Rd. near Perrault Rd.
southeast of Carlsbad Springs on April 1st, an Eastern Phoebe at
Richmond Rd. and Twin Elm Rd. and a few American Pipits on Wall
Rd. also on the 31st, approx. a dozen Tree Swallows along Russell
Rd. east of Bourget on the 1st, and an Eastern Meadowlark and a
few Rusty Blackbirds in the Milton Rd. and Frank Kenney Rd. areas
also on the 1st.

Back on the 28th, an adult Red-shouldered Hawk caught a Meadow
Vole on Greenland Rd. near Dunrobin, a group of 9 Wild Turkeys
with one male in full display was observed on March Valley Rd.,
and 2 Gray Partridges were seen in the Pendleton area on the 29th
and 30th.

An adult CALIFORNIA GULL reported from Parc Brebeuf on the Ottawa
River on the evening of March 30th was searched for has not
subsequently seen yet.

Thank you - Good Birding!
