This morning was my first time bicycling into work this year. As I waited at
a red light at Highway 7 and Allstate Parkway, half-choking in the fumes of
six lanes of buses, cars and trucks, I heard the unmistakable song of an
eastern meadowlark rising over the roar of the engines. I dragged the bike
up onto the sidewalk so I wouldn't get run over before I spotted him,
perched at the tip-top of a pine tree right on the northwest corner of this
busy intersection, singing his lovely song. If I'd been driving, I'd never
have known he was there.
