Hello Everyone
Today, April 13th, I lead an Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club outing to
the floodplains east of Ottawa. Despite the lack of flood waters, there
were still good numbers of geese and other puddle ducks. Highlights included
a number of large flocks of Greater Snow Geese totaling 8,450+ plus over
3000 Northern Pintail and 350 Green-winged Teal. These birds were mainly
concentrated in the Cobb Lake Creek/ Bourget and Cheney areas. Along Milton
Road north east of Carlsbad Springs, 5 Sandhill Cranes were observed feeding
in the cornfields north west of Perrault Road.

Carlsbad Springs/Bear Brook: Take Hwy 417 east from Ottawa to exit 96
(Carlsbad Springs), go north to Cty rd. #26 (Russell Rd.), then north on #85
(Milton Rd.)
To get to Cobbs Lake from Ottawa, travel east on Highway 417
to Boundary Road (exit #96) and turn left (north) toward Carlsbad
Springs. At the "T" junction of Boundary Road and Russell Road (Route
26), turn right (east) on Russell and continue until you come to Bourget
(approximately 25 km). In Bourget, there is a 4-way stop sign. Go
straight and, a couple of km further along, the road goes through a
spring flood plain; this is the Cobbs Lake Creek area.
