On Monday May 17th a group of birders were treated to the sounds of both chuck- will's-widow and whip-poor-will calling simultaneously from south of the Visitor's Centre.
This morning, May 18th at Wheatley Provincial Park, a fly-by of 4 whimbrel was the best bird tallied for the Norman Chesterfield Memorial Bird Hike. With winds changing to the east overnight the park was quiet with only 63 species tallied for the morning outing that fifty birders enjoyed. The prothonotary warbler can be seen regularaly on the Tulip Tree Trail in Rondeau. An orange-crowned warbler was seen on the Spice Bush Trail this morning. The bird hike at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons this afternoon produced 20 black- bellied plover (fly-by heading to Erieau), 1 Wilson's phalerope, 30 dunlin, 2 lesser yellowlegs, 1 semi-palmated sandpiper, 2 spotted sandpiper and 1 least sandpiper. 7 ruddy ducks can still be seen there. Birders wishing to hear the chuck-will's-widow should arrive around 8:45pm. On a calm night, it can be heard easily from the Visitor's Centre. Birders are encouraged to not attempt to chase this bird. Directions: Take Highway 401 to Exit 101 and turn south and follow the signs to Rondeau. X-BeenThere: [email protected] X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 20:58:23 -0000 Posting for Deborah Panko and Ron Cole: At 2:30 this afternoon, Deborah Panko and Ron Cole found a Yellow-throated Warbler at the laneway which connects the lighthouse parking lot with Bayshore Road at Presqu'ile Provincial Park. After moving up Paxton Drive for 100+ metres, it re-appeared at the original location and was still in that vicinity at 5:00 p.m. At least 16 people have seen the bird. Yesterday in the same general area I saw a male Hooded Warbler, but it has not been seen again. To reach Presqu'ile Park follow the signs from Brighton. Once in the Park, follow the one-way road system until you reach the Visitor Centre parking lot beside the lighthouse. The bird remained between Paxton Drive and the private residences on Bayshore Road. -- -- Fred Helleiner 186 Bayshore Road, R.R. #4, Brighton, Ontario, Canada, K0K 1H0 VOICE: (613) 475 5309 If visiting, access via Presqu'ile Provincial Park.
