After reading of the piping plover at the Pinery not be spotted due to
unrestricted access, the news is better for the one spotted at Beach 1 at
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. The area at the extreme end of Beach 1 has
been fenced and is patrolled by MNR staff and volunteers. There were a
pair originally spotted giving rise to hope that they were nesting but
lately only the male has been seen. The female may have succumbed to
predators. The male has been most often seen along the shore.
This siting has been reported in local papers and on local television stations.
To get to Wasaga Beach take Highway 400 north to the Bayfield exit in
Barrie. Go north on Bayview which turns into Highway 27. Follow 27 to
Elmvale and turn left at the lights onto Highway 92. When entering Wasaga
Beach follow the signs and Main Street to the beach area. Beach 1 is
located immediately right after you cross the bridge. Follow the road to
the end and park and walk up to the fence.
