The first good sighting was a PEREGRINE FALCON which slowly cruised fairly low over my head. Minutes later a MERLIN zipped by me flying low to the ground. Among a large flock of AMERICAN PIPITS there was 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR. Of the ten species of shorebirds noted there was 1 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 20 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 1 SANDERLING. There were 3 REDHEADS among the many dabbling ducks. A fairly good search through the Owl Woods could not come up with any NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS that were reported yesterday by Karen and Alex Scott, but 4 LONG-EARED OWLS were seen. Large numbers of kinglets and sparrows and a few species of common warblers were present. Met Owen Weir at the Amherstview Lagoons where we found 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. A MERLIN and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK were seen. The day ended with my second reddish-type saddlebags dragonfly within a month, but again could not get a good enough look to identify to species. Arrgh. 71 bird species and 7 butterfly species for the morning.
