The Ottawa River continues to be the choice birding area in the region, with a couple of rarities and some other interesting sightings reported over the past week. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found at the base of the Shirley's Bay causeway on the morning of Sept. 25th and was seen again later that afternoon but has not been reported since. A 1st-winter FRANKLIN'S GULL, possibly the same bird that was last reported on Sept. 14th, was seen east of the Remic rapids lookout on the morning of the 30th but was not relocated the following day. Also at Shirley's Bay, 1 Common Loon, 3 Red-necked Grebes and 2 of the GREAT EGRETS were seen on Oct. 2nd, as well as 6 species of shorebirds including 1 White-rumped Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin and 1 Wilson's Snipe. Back on the 26th, 2 Great Horned Owls and 2 American Woodcocks were seen along the trail to the causeway. Other shorebirds reported from the river on the weekend included Sanderling and Pectoral Sandpiper at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park. On the river from Shirley's Bay through to the Britannia Conservation Area this weekend, there was a total of 18 species of waterfowl including Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler and Gadwall and 6 Redhead at Shirley's Bay. Ten White-winged Scoters and 2 Common Goldeneye at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park were signs of the impending cold to come. Several raptor sightings along the river included Turkey Vulture, Northern Harrier, Cooper's Hawk and an adult female Peregrine Falcon. Nine species of warblers including Nashville, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Black- throated Blue and Bay-breasted were found in the woods along the same strip. Other interesting observations from various locations around the Ottawa-Gatineau area included the following: 2 American Bitterns at a pond in Gatineau Park near the Chelsea Visitor's Centre on the 30th and an adult Bald Eagle soaring over the same location on the 1st, a female Black-backed Woodpecker near the intersection of Old Carp Rd. and 2nd Line Rd. north of Kanata also on the 1st, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo along Cassels St. south of the Yacht Club at Britannia on the 2nd, 23 mostly juvenile Wild Turkeys in a dry pond on March Valley Dr. opposite the Skeet Club on the 25th, large numbers of American Pipits along the river all week, a very late House Wren in the neighbourhood south of Lincoln Fields shopping centre and a late Scarlet Tanager at Shirley's Bay both on the 2nd. Increasing waves of both Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets as well as larger numbers of White-crowned Sparrows continue to be noted, and last but not least, flocks of blackbirds have been gathering and 15 Rusty Blackbirds were noted Britannia on Sept. 24th. The Ottawa-Gatineau Fall Bird Count is coming up. This annual event will be held from 3:00 PM Saturday Oct.15th to 3:00 PM Sunday Oct. 16th.
