Well over 100 visitors came to the CMRW platform on Oct.29. Many of them were richly rewarded, what with the likes of positive identifying of 2 CAVE SWALLOWS at 0945, and possible single sightings during the day; at 1502 Rayfield Pye and I were looking behind everyone when a big low-flying IBIS came through--Ray called out "IBIS", the platform becoming a place of excitation, everyone witnessing it fly around a bit before landing on the far side of the alder island--several went over to try to put a fix on the species--no luck--therefore, an IBIS SP.--great bird!!
During the morning we had 8 FOX SPARROWS, 47 SNOW BUNTINGS, KINGFISHER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, HOODED MERGANSER, AND, YES, A R-T HUMMINGBIRD. 3 FEMALE R-N PHEASANTS FLEW IN ; LATER IN THE DAY A MALE CALLED OUT NEARBY. As for the raptor watch, many people had wonderful looks at 8 juvenile GOLDEN EAGLES. Among the other 197 migrant hawks were 31 Turkey Vultures, 8 N.Harriers, 29 Sharp-shinneds and 116 Red-taileds. Lately the north and northwest winds and rising BP, along with a Thermal Updraft Velocity of over 200ft./min., have been responsible for good viewings of migrating raptors, coming off Thickson Pt. to the east. Hall's Rd. is in southwest Whitby. Doug Lockrey, Whitby
