Subject: [Ontbirds]Pine Grosbeaks in Muskoka
This afternoon we found about forty Pine Grosbeaks along the Trans Canada
Trail east of the Henry marsh in Bracebridge. There have been small
numbers of them in that area for the past two weeks but this is the first
time there were so many you couldn't miss them. They were calling
frequently and feeding in the fir trees. Two White-winged Crossbills were
seen along the same section of trail a couple of weeks ago, but none
since.
Directions:
Bracebridge is about 2 hrs. drive north of Toronto. From Hwy. 11
northbound, take first exit to Bracebridge and follow Hwy. 118 West until
you come to the first set of traffic lights. Turn left onto Beaumont Dr.
and continue to Henry Rd. There is a small parking area by the trailhead.
Walk to the "T" in the trail, and turn left (east) - the grosbeaks were
within 15 minute walk from the car. (note: there is a snowmobile trail
to your left before you reach the "T", and tall snowboots are required to
walk the trail right now thanks to recent snowsqualls)
