Today/Nov.30 marked the end of a 110-day season at CMRW I credit its success to a wonderful team of observers & counters AND their camaraderie. The only downer was that throughout September there were NO SUCCESSIVE DAYS OF NW WINDS, RISING BP AND A TUV of 200+ ft./min. Therefore the migrating BROAD-WINGED HAWKS "avoided the lakefront route"; indeed, the BW count in Aug. and Sep. was only 220!!! For the 3rd consecutive year the total hawk count in Aug. & Sep.(1,811) was considerably lower than that of Oct.(4,694)
To end the count we had 3 migrating raptors today (1 Cooper's, 1 Red-tailed, 1 Rough-legged), and among the non-raptors were GRACKLE, N.SHRIKE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET & 5 SPARROW SPP. The 110-day count (with the 1990-2004 average in brackets): turkey vulture 2938 (1479); osprey 122 (90); bald eagle 43 (24); northern harrier 102 (185); sharp-shinned hawk 1242 (2181); Cooper's hawk 188 (97); northern goshawk 17 (21); red-shouldered hawk 47 (91); broad-winged 220 (3874); red-tailed 1260 (1381); rough-legged 39 (86); golden eagle 24 (11); American kestrel 486 (742); merlin 29 (35); peregrine falcon 16 (24); TOTAL--6921, including 148 Unidentifieds. The 1990-2004 TOTAL average was10,490. The surroundings entice visitors to come to view both raptors and many non-raptor species. We certainly had many visitors to see the likes of Cave Swallows, Ibis sp., Cattle Egrets, Great Egret, 15 Warbler spp. That's it. Again, merci. It was sitting on the water at a distance but then got up and flew towards the Burlington Waterfront where we lost sight of it. Cheers, Cheryl Edgecombe Directions; From the QEW (Burlington way),Take the QEW towards Niagara, going over the skyway, or Eastport drive (lower level) exit at the Woodward exit, turn right (towards the lake) at Woodward and go under the QEW and coming to stop lights at Beach Blvd. If you were on Eastport Drive,(heading east from Burlington) you will turn left at the lights at Woodward. Turn right at the Beach Blvd lights, and head east along the beach until you almost get to the Famous Hutch's fish & chip outlet. Park in the lot just before you get to Hutch's.
