8 serious winter birders braved the cold winds along Lake Ontario and
were rewarded with some good finds, including a male Harlequin Duck
near the s.e. point on the east side of Humber Bay Pk., located at the
south end of Park Lawn Rd. at Lakeshore Blvd., Toronto. Also there
were all 3 mergansers. On the west side 2 Savannah sparrows flew along
the beach, a Mockingbird huddled against the trunk of a conifer, both
Horned and Red-necked Grebes were seen amongst the rafts of ducks. An
immature Black-crowned Night Heron roosted along the river above
Lakeshore Blvd.
At Colonel Sam Smith Pk. off Lakeshore at the foot of Kipling
Ave., several Golden-crowned Kinglets, 3 Common Loons, 3 Red-necked
Grebes, a first-winter Iceland Gull, and just offshore, a first-year
Black-legged Kittiwake. The latter quickly flew west and could not be
relocated.

For Mississauga winter listers an easy Peregrine Falcon (I assume one of =
the ones that nested out of the hack box on this building) can be found =
on the most northerly Shipp building on the east side of Hurontario =
Street across from Square One.=20
Easiest way to describe getting to this location is as follows.
Go north on Hurontario from Burnhamthorpe Road. Turn east on Rathburn =
and then make a quick right turn (to the south) onto Shipp Blvd. Proceed =
sthly to the all glass building (the first one) on the right.=20
The bird was at the same level and close to the easily visible nesting =
box near the top of the building. (NE face)
This hacking box has been used by a pair of Peregrines for several years =
now and this pair is one not highly advertised.=20

Winter Birders,
Temps were rather low today for December - 25 degrees F and winds were strong
over the onion fields with drifting snow hampering our driving down some of
the roads. On Mersea "D", across from house #1534 we found 4 Northern Harriers
sitting in the field. All were rather close to each other and at one time
two seemed to be pecking at food, sharing? Very odd. One Harrier was an adult
male with a beautiful gray coat of feathers. Many more Harriers were spotted
during our road-trip along with a Rough-legged Hawk.
Farther down "D" at the stop sign where it intersects with 19 (this area has
a small red barn and was a hunting spot for the Swainson's Hawk last spring)
we found a good number of Snow Buntings in the field adjacent to the barn. I'd
estimate at least 300.
Good winter birding to all and Happy Holidays.

Boreal Chickadee - Constance Bay near Ottawa - still present

A few people have been out to look for the Boreal
Chickadee that we found on Tuesday, most without any
luck. This is an update. The bird was busy at our
feeders (eating suet and sunflower seeds) this
afternoon (3-4 pm) when it was snowing heavily. It has
been intermittent and hard to find most days. Perhaps
if we get a bit more snow it will become more regular.
Constance Bay is west of Ottawa on the Ottawa River.
To get here, follow March Road from Kanata to Dunrobin
Road. Follow Dunrobin Road past Dunrobin and Woodlawn
and turn N onto Constance Bay Drive. The Boreal
Chickadee is at 146 Monty Drive (2nd right off
Constance Bay Drive). Please knock on the door to see
if we are home. If not, feel free to wander around the
yard if you come to look for the chickadee. Follow the
river west from the end of Constance Bay Drive and you
will easily find many access points from which to view
the river.

Hi Birders,
Today Mike and I did a drive north of Waterloo around Linwood. We came up
with some good birds. The best being a Red-tailed Hawk that we believe is of
the western subspecies "calurus". The bird was an adult, with a slightly
darker reddish-brown tail than typical RTHA's, the breast was noticeably
creamier with heavy streaking and the throat was mostly (completely?) dark.
We found a similar bird pictured at:
http://www.hawk-conservancy.org/images/mica.jpg
The Red-tailed Hawk was hanging out near a mink farm, at the corner of
Lichty Rd. and Schummer Line. There was also lots of gulls present,
including 2 Glaucous (1 first-winter and 1 adult), 4 Iceland Gulls (1 adult,
1 second-winter and 2 first-winters), 1 first-winter Thayer's Gull and one
bird we assumed to be an adult Great Black-backed X Herring Gull hybrid.
East of here along Schummer and north along Lichty we also had 17
Rough-legged Hawks (13 light, 4 dark) and several other Red-tails and
Kestrels. Nearby we also watched a hen Ring-necked Pheasant fly across the
road.
Directions: From Hwy 85 travel north to Line 86, after Macton you will come
to Lichty Rd, Schummer line is one road south. The Mink Farm is right on
the northeast corner of Lichty and Schummer, and the birds are best viewed
from Schummer Line.
Good Birding,
Kenny Burrell,
