Just before dusk, my daughter Robin said "what's that?" as we passed the
naturalized shoreline in Ashbridge's Bay Park (enter at the foot of Coxwell Av
from Lakeshore Blvd in Toronto, walk south along the marina fence and continue
along the edge of the water). Turning my head, I got a 1 second glimpse of the
unmistakable outline of a winter wren on a weed stalk before it disappeared
into the undergrowth. The beaver too did not welcome my stare, and dove soon
after I spotted it swimming among the wharves of the sailing club. In the
alders a flock of 15 redpolls gave us much longer looks as they worked over the
cones.

Good birding.

Fellow Birders,

We've been enjoying an early winter here at Long Point. The inner bay has
pretty much frozen over and most of the waterfowl have moved on. Tundra Swans
have even become a hard bird to find. Landbirds on the other hand are quite
numerous and interesting. A hatch-year female Oregon Junco has been
frequenting the feeder set-up at the Old Cut Field Station since Dec 10 along
with about three to four hundred other birds, mostly American Tree Sparrow and
Slate-coloured Junco's. This is actually the second Oregon Junco in the
region so far this winter as a hatch-year male has been frequenting a feeder
near Fisher's Glen. Up to six Fox Sparrows are still frequenting the feeders
and lingering in the Old Cut wood lot along with a Hermit Thrush and
Golden-crowned Kinglets. Last week, around the 5th, there still an American
Woodcock albeit a frozen hungry one.

Other interesting feeder birds at Old Cut include:
  Rusty Blackbird
  Chipping Sparrow
  Field Sparrow
  Savannah Sparrow
  Pine Siskin
  Northern Goshawk
  Cooper's Hawk

Merry Christmas Bird Counting and Seasons Greetings from Long Point.

To get to the Long Point region follow the 401 to Hwy # 59 and follow south.
The Old Cut Field Station is on Old Cut Blvd. off of Hwy # 59 near the
Provincial Park (on Long Point).

Hello all,

Just a quick note about the Wye Marsh's trumpeter swans.the population at
our docks has been fluctuating between 13-25 the past few days, with many
more in the area.one gentleman called in last weekend and reported a flock
of over 50 birds in the Triple Bay area in Port McNicoll, and driving around
there the next day I spotted 37 individuals. So, they're grouping up and on
the move!

Also, we've got a Christmas Bird Count happening at 9am on December 17
starting at the Wye Marsh Centre. Anyone who's willing to join in and
volunteer with this would be great.I'm looking forward to it as it's been
far too long since I've been able to dedicate time to just birdwatching.but
from what I have passively seen in the past month, there's a lot of great
activity out there.

If you're thinking of coming, just simply RSVP to my address,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or call the centre at 705 526 7809 so we know how many
people to expect.bring your own binocs and books!

Cheers,

Julie Kee
