Yesterday December the 20th, there were 104 Brant
Geese in front of Chimny Island along the St. Lawrance
River. I was quite supprised myself, as there are
usualy numerous Canada Geese in this section but no
Brants this time of year. I dout these birds will be
there again any time soon but I thaught I would post
anyways (most of the waterfowl in this area tends to
come and go). Today the 21st there were 8 Trumpeter
swans in about the same location, two of which were
1st year birds. These birds have been hanging around
various oppen sections of the river for the last week
or so. Also on the west site of Mallorytown Landing
just past Larue mills (dont think I spelled that
right) there was an American Robin seen flying north
into the woods.

Mallorytown Landing can be reached via the 401 by
taking the mallorytown exit and heading south.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:00 pm, MONDAY DECEMBER 19, 2005.

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Two local Christmas Bird Counts were held under excellent weather
conditions this past weekend, with lots of open water still in the
rapid areas of both the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers. Preliminary
totals were 50 species on the Dunrobin-Breckenridge Count on the
17th and 82 species for the Ottawa-Gatineau Count on the 18th.
Record high numbers of Wild Turkeys were found on both counts, and
several other highlights included the following:

A Red-necked Grebe on the Ottawa River at Bate Island, a Northern
Shoveler in the Hull sector in Quebec, a female Long-tailed Duck
and a male Bufflehead both at Bate Island, a total of at least 4
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a Common X Barrow's hybrid still on both
the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers, an immature Common Moorhen in the
Sabourin marsh on the Quebec side, 3 Eastern Screech-Owls in the
Carp area including one in the village of Carp in a ravine near
the intersection of Donald B. Munro and Carp Rds., 2 Red-headed
Woodpeckers in Constance Bay, a total of 3 BOREAL CHICKADEES in
unspecified locations on both the Ontario and Quebec sides, a
Winter Wren along a small creek on Mary Dr. off Lewer St. near
Black Rapids, a Northern Mockingbird in a vacant lot on Mory St.
west of Albion Rd., a Fox Sparrow in the Gloucester sector, and a
Song Sparrow on an island in the Ottawa River behind Parliament
Hill.

Other good birds reported over the past week included a male Wood
Duck on Lower Duck Island in the Ottawa River on the 11th and
several Bald Eagles mostly on the Ottawa River with 8 reported on
the Dunrobin-Breckenridge Count. Snowy Owl sightings came from
Eagleson Rd. between Fallowfield and Richmond Rd., and south of
the International Airport, as well as the Experimental Farm near
Woodroffe Ave., and the Frank Kenny / Regimbald Rd. area. The
NORTHERN HAWK OWL at Frank Kenny and Innes Rds. was also still
present as of at least the 12th.

Reports of Northern Shrikes and good numbers of Bohemian Waxwings
came in from various locations. Pine Grosbeak numbers are
evidently increasing, and small numbers of White-winged
Crossbills, Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins and Evening Grosbeaks
also continue to be reported from various locations around our
area.

Thank you - Good Birding!
