We saw a Rough-legged Hawk sitting on a hydro pole around noon along Hwy 2 on the south side just past the lights for the new NoFrills supercentre on the east side of Brighton. We saw what was probably the same Hawk along Hwy 64 just east out of Brighton yesterday. That's about a mile or less south of Hwy 2. We've seen at least 4 ravens while driving along Hwy 2 in the past week or so, and we also had a flock of Waxwings land in a tree in our front yard on Walt St in Smithfield. We were pretty certain at least one was a Bohemian. Red-tailed Hawks continue to hunt daily in the meadow below our house and of course are often harrassed by crows. Brighton is about 3 miles south of the 401 from exit #509, approximately 90 miles east of Toronto. Sorry about the "miles" but I can't think in kilometers! Ivory Gull at the 1st. bridge overlooking the North end of Hillman Marsh (the second bridge is closest to Lake Erie). The Bird was feeding away and alone from the 1000's of Ring-bill's and Herring Gulls that were in the deeper water, the Ivory Gull was along the edge of the Cat-tails and close to shore. The Bird was last seen flying East over the Cat-tails towards North East Hillman at 3:10pm. The Bird looked somewhat sluggish and possibly ill, so I would think there is an excellent chance of re-finding it. Rosalie and I were able to capture excellent full frame images that I will post later tonight on my web site. Hillman Marsh is North East of Point Pelee National Park along Lake Erie. Thanks you Adam and Rosalie for my NUMBER 1 DREAM PELEE BIRD!! Good luck! Steve Pike. -- Mark Cranford ONTBIRDS Coordinator Mississauga, Ont. I haven't been able to rule out that the bird is not a Western Meadowlark and would welcome other opinions. It has some yellow (not much) in the malar stripe, the lines on the flanks seem quite broken, and the bird does not flush when the occasional traffic passes within several metres of the bird (although all the other birds do). Directions: Fallowfield Road runs west off 34 about 8 to 10 minutes north of the Lancaster exit off the 401. From Ottawa, exit 417 for Cornwall, south to Monkland, east to Alexandria, south to Fallowfield Road, then west to 19901. Martin Bowman Willaimstown, ON
