Greetings all,
I just saw what was presumably the same female Yellow-headed
Blackbird that was seen on the Presqu'ile CBC on 18 Dec. It was with
a nice mixed flock which included 60 Rusty, 60 Red-wings, 45 cowbirds
and 2 Starlings. It is quite brown in body plumage with a small but
fairly bright area of yellow restricted to the throat and upper
breast. It appeared no larger than the adjacent Rusty's which
somewhat surprised me. The bird was sitting with the other blackbirds
in the tops of several large maples, then all flew off over the
extensive fields that border Weller's Bay.
Directions: The general area of this sighting is near the shore of
Weller's Bay between Brighton and Trenton, or about 2 km WSW of
Carrying Place. Specifically it was seen about 100m east of the
junction of Cty. Rd. 64 and Alyea Rd, but the flock is obviously
moving around and they may be feeding in nearby corn fields much of
the time. There are also several houses with feeders in this area as
well. If it is not where I saw the flock, a slow cruise on nearby
roads may well turn it up again.
