Today we observed for most of the afternoon a single short eared owl,
sitting along the fence line on the north side of Con 6, across from the
"Raptor Rehabilitation" sign.
We hung around for quite awhile and were well rewarded with the owls in
flight - they(12 to 20) came out from the south of the road and made their
way to the north side of Con 6. To observe their flight patterns was
amazing, they soar quite well, and then when they start to flap they dip at
bit, similar to that of a bat in flight. I also observed the wing beats,
slow and steady, with the wings kind of floppy on profile. To draw a
comparison, they look like a slow flying very large chimney swift. I've
been waiting for an opportunity to see these wonderful creatures in flight!
