Hello Ontbirders
Over the last few weeks I have made periodic checks for the Peregrine
Falcons at Pharmacy and Eglinton. Usually one or both can be found on the
south side of the Bell building, which is on just north of Eglinton on the
east side of Pharmacy.This afternoon as I drove south on Pharmacy, 2
Peregrines were harrasing 2 separate flocks of Rock Pigeons in the area of
Pharmacy and Lawrence. Presumably the same pair, which was absent from the
Bell building at the time.
This is a nice location to observe these magnificent birds, since they can
be easily seen with binoculars from the parking lot on the west side of
Pharmacy (north of Eglinton behind Zellers). The Bell building is only
about 6 stories tall, so the birds are not too high up. Please note that
the gate at the Bell building itself is marked with No Trespassing signs.

Directions:
Pharmacy is one block east of Victoria Park. From the 401 exit at Victoria
Park, go south to Ellesmere or Lawrence. Go east to Pharmacy and go south
to the parking lot, which is on the northwest corner of Pharmacy and
Eglinton. (You can see the large communications tower which is beside the
Bell building from a long way away)

Another exciting find in Regional Niagara were 2 Ross's Goose reported =
by Brad Clements in Welland. John Black and I observed the birds this =
morning in company with many hundreds of Canada Goose. The birds were =
on the west side of the Welland River off Merritt Island, a recreational =
area in downtown Welland.=20
Directions: From the Queen Elizabeth, take Highway 406 south at St. =
Catharines to the very end of the highway where it T's on to East Main =
Street. Turn right and proceed 3 or 4 lights to Hellems Ave (bus =
terminal on corner). Turn right here and go 100 yards or so to the =
river. Start looking for the two birds here among the several hundred =
Canada's and other varied waterfowl that are present. If not observed, =
go right onto Dorothy Street and then a quick left onto River Road. =
Continue north on River Road checking for the birds every so often. =
There are several good pull-offs along the way. =20
Reaching this area from the south or west is a fair bit tricky because =
East Main Street is a one-way street running west. I would suggest any =
Buffalo/Fort Erie birders take the QEW north to Netherby Road, go west =
(left) on Netherby to Highway 140, and take 140 north (right) to the =
lights at East Main Street. Turn left here, go under the Welland Canal =
tunnel, then follow as above. From Port Colborne, take Highway 140 =
north and follow as above. =20
Two Ross's Goose were observed for several weeks along the Lake Erie =
shoreline at Point Abino. They have not been observed for about a =
week....it is not certain if these two birds might have come to the =
Welland River from Point Abino.

My brother and I spotted a Brown Creeper and Pine Warbler Saturday, March 4
around 12.30 pm.
From the parking area, cross the bridge, turn right along the creek and at
the wide opening,
head north passed the garden plots. Continue to where the pipeline makes a
90 degree right turn. Head north on the pipeline right of way, passed the new
housing construction on the left field. Continue north to a large woodlot of
pine and deciduous trees on the right. The male Pine Warbler was singing in
the pine trees a short distance along the trail. Could this be the same bird we
saw in January and has fortunately survived our winter?
Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rod and go south, turn right at Lakeshore
Road. Shell Park is on the right about 1 km to the west.

Two adult peregrines regularly roost near the top of the CIBC building =
on the Northwest corner of Yonge & Bloor in Toronto. Sometimes, one is =
at rest and the other does spectacular flying displays nearby. No =
evidence of nesting, but one was devouring its prey yesterday. They rest =
on the top of the brown window sets just below the top. They are never =
together. When both are roosting they stay several yards apart, often on =
different sides of the building.

My apartment on the 38th floor of the ManuLife Centre affords a =
spectacular view, especially in the bright sunlight of the last few =
days.

The Yonge and Bloor intersection is best reached from its eponymous =
subway station.

The Kawartha Field Naturalists saw two Snowy Owls at the Bradford site =
described in Ron Fleming's postings. They were sitting in the fields =
north of Woodchopper's Lane one on the west side of Jane Street and the =
other on the east. They were distant views through wind activated scopes =
but one owl appeared to be all white and the other barred. We had closer =
views of the owl on the west side by driving to the end of Edward Ave. =
Four members of our party had never seen a Snowy Owl before and it was =
very satisfying to see the impact these birds had.
Directions: Jane Street north of Highway 9 and just east of Highway 400. =
Detailed directions in Ron Fleming's postings are very helpful.
The Great Gray Owl just north of Fenelon Falls on Regional Highway 121 =
was not seen at 8:00 a.m. but was actively hunting at 5:40 p.m.
Directions: 0.5 kms north of the intersection of Regional Highway 121 =
and Regional Highway 8. In the fields west of the road from the storage =
units to the first farm on the west side.

Observed two snowy owls today on Amherst Island. One on the KFN property
and the second adjacent to the trail that leads into owl woods. No owls
sighted in owl woods but also saw a single short eared hunting in the
field on the east side of the trail. See link for snow owl picture.

Directions: Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Road 4, Camden East)
and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and
drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The
ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the
island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 round trip. There are no gas stations
on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry
dock.
