Hi Ontbirders,
I made an ambitious walk of the entire Marsh Trail (14 km) in Rondeau Park
this morning and was rewarded with a flock of an even 20 GREATER
WHITE-RONTED GEESE. These were about three quarters of the way out on the
east side of the trail where there is a dead end trail perpendicular to the
main trail. Unfortunately they took off heading south, so they could be
anywhere in the Rondeau area. This species has only been reported about
three times in the past in the area (twice last year).
Also seen were all the usual ducks for this time of year (19 species) on the
Bay. There were a few meadowlarks along the way. A female Purple Finch was
near the beginning of the trail.
I also heard a couple of SANDHILL CRANES in the marsh, but did not see them.
The number of gulls was incredible! There were about 1000 near the end of
the Marsh Trail, but the north end of the Bay was white with 8-9000 gulls or
more. The only thing different from the usual 4 species was an adult LITTLE
GULL at the far north end of the Bay. It was impossible to get a good look
at most of the gulls.
I did check Lagoon Rd near Erieau where 2 Snowy Owls were seen yesterday,
but I missed them today.

Rondeau Provincial Park is found by exiting 401 at #101 (Kent Bridge Rd.)
and travelling south to Rose Beach Line. Turn right and head towards the
park. Watch for prominent highway signs. Marsh Trail is on the right side
a short distance from the park gate.
