Hello all, I observed an adult White-fronted Goose, today [March 15] in a flooded field ,near Beachville. It was with 150 Tundra Swans as well as various waterfowl [GW Teal,N Pintail, A Wigeon etc.] Although the bird sported a brilliant orange-red bill and extensive underbelly barring, I will refrain from speculating on the subspecific ID ,as that appears problematical.
To find the bird ,take County Road 6 north from the 401 to CR 9,east to Beachville, north on the 43rd Line about 1km.Look on the east side of the flooded fields for the Swans and other waterfowl. Lee Browns Wildlife Area is ~6 km SW of Highway 59, along Co. Rd. 42. (W of Long Point). The bird was in a pond in the field SE of the main fenced pond. We also saw a flock of 7 Little Gulls at Port Rowan overlook. This site is NE of Highway 59 along Co. Rd. 42. Drive into Port Rowan and where the road bends N away from the water is a pull off overlooking the lake. Park here and watch. Bonapartes and Little Gulls pass the area in numbers on good days. This is a great spot to see Little Gulls this time of the year (sometimes over 100 in a day). Otherwise, the birding was good in the Long Point area with thousands of ducks, geese and swans (all expected species including the first few Blue-winged Teal of the year). Tens of thousands of Canvasback along the Long Point causeway highlighted the spectacle. Good birding, Jeff Jeff Skevington, Invertebrate Biodiversity Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada K.W.
