A week of below normal temperatures and relentless strong WNW winds certainly put a damper on spring migrants after the sudden influx last weekend. However, a few reports of local interest came in. The elusive grey morph GYRFALCON was noted again, this time on the morning of March 16th, flying over the Carlington quarry near the Clyde Ave. woods. The woods at Clyde were also productive this week for a good variety of species including a Northern Goshawk on the 16th and 18th, the continued presence of Long-eared and Northern Saw-whet Owls from the 13th through the 18th, a Barred Owl on the 19th, a small group of approx. a half-dozen White- winged Crossbills that dropped in briefly on the 16th, and a singing Pine Siskin on the 18th. Another Northern Saw-whet Owl was discovered in a small copse of cedars along March Valley Rd. near the Marshes golf course on the afternoon of the 18th. Other signs of spring in spite of the weather included a male Ring-necked Duck on the Quebec side above the Deschenes rapids on the 19th, a Northern Harrier along Earl Armstrong Road south of the international airport on the 18th, a Red-shouldered Hawk being pursued by American Crows over Richmond Rd. in the neighbourhood of Britannia on the 13th, at least 3 Rough-legged Hawks in agricultural areas east of Ottawa on the 18th, the 1st report of a very early Eastern Bluebird at 5th Line Rd. and Berry Side Rd. west of Kanata on the 16th and 19th, and Song Sparrows have been widely reported as of the 18th. A Peregrine Falcon was on the R.H. Coats building at Tunney's Pasture on the 18th and another was in the Carp area the same day. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was seen on the Ottawa River on the Quebec side below the Deschenes rapids on the evening of the 17th. Otherwise, a few Northern Shrikes, several American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles continue to hold on, and small numbers of Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins continue to visit feeders around our area. Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
