April 17, Another fine afternoon at Columbia Lake in North Waterloo,
produced some nice sightings.

There have been a small flock of Buffleheads in the lake for about two weeks
engaging in their head-bobbing courtship behaviour, and always quite visible
out in the open water.

Four Caspian Terns were sharing Western shoreline with all the gulls.

A Greater Yellowlegs was wading and fishing in the shallows on the North
side of the lake. A first for me!

Columbia Lake is North of the University of Waterloo Campus at the
intersection of Columbia and Westmount streets.

Happy Birding,
Mike McNulty

Having just read recently posted bird lists from Temiskaming,
Huntsville, etc., ONTBIRDS subscribers may also be interested in
learning that, in addition to the Sandhill Cranes, Woodcocks, and
Ruffed Grouse that we listed in our report of April 16, other species
back in Algoma (Hwy. 553 north of Massey, ON) include: Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, Common Loon (very vocal), Yellow-shafted Flicker (very noisy,
engaged in territorial squabbles), Dark-eyed Junco, Belted Kingfisher,
Song Sparrow (singing on territory, Turkey Vulture, and Common Grackle.
Robins were everywhere, singing loudly.
