At 9:30 this morning a large owl was perched on a fence post near the roadside on highway 48. To my eye it looked just like the great grays we saw so often last year. Large size, prominent white handlebar "mustache, " and no visible horizontal barring on the chest, just vertical stripes all the way down. We watched for several minutes as the owl turned its head in various directions as heavy traffic rushed by. I'd be confident in calling it a great gray except that my companion, who had closer looks than I did as we drove slowly directly past the bird, was sure that the eyes were brown, not yellow. I hope others get better looks. The owl was on the north side of 48 across from a turf farm, east of Duclos Pt. Road.
