On June 16/17, teams of birders are invited to take part in the Carden
Challenge, competing to list the greatest number of species in a 24-hour period
within the Carden CBC circle. There are great prizes for the individual and
teams with the highest pledges, as well as a trophy for the highest bird count.

Last year, the Guttersnipe team from Barrie took home the Carden Cup, with a
count of 114 species. The 8 teams participating raised over $10,000 for
conservation of bird habitats on the Carden Alvar.

This year's celebrity birder will be Chris Earley. If you want more
information about entering a team, or would like to sponsor Chris Earley, you
can contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for your support!

Hi Ontbirders,
A single LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER has been frequenting a wetland outside of
Wallaceburg along the Chenel Ecarte (Snye R.).
I first found this bird Sunday afternoon. This bird is moulting into
alternate plumage. Although ID by sight was tough, the date and the fact
that I heard the call confirmed its identity.
Other shorebirds include the usuals such as Dunlin, Pectoral Sandpiper, and
both Yellowlegs.
This wetland was created in late summer 2004 by DU on farmland that was once
natural marsh. The water level was drawn down about ten days ago to provide
habitat for migrating shorebirds.

Also of interest nearby this morning, I noted a significant migration of
COMMON LOONS on the St. Clair River at Port Lambton. In about twenty
minutes after 07:30, I saw over 50 loons heading north in small groups.

Directions to Stewart Wetland: Get on hwy 40 between Sarnia and Wallaceburg
and find Langstaff Line which runs east/west just north of Wallaceburg.
>From hwy 40 turn west and follow Langstaff Line to its very westerly end.
You will see MacDonald Park in front of you on the Snye R. Turn left on St.
Clair Parkway and go to the south end of MacDonald Park where there is a
boat ramp. The wetland is here on the south side of the parking lot. You
can walk on the dyke. Port Lambton can be found by turning right on the St.
Clair Parkway at this location and heading north.
