Hello Ontbirders
Although the day started slow, and lacked warblers, we had a very
entertaining day, ending with a spectacular evening.

We started by checking areas along the Ottawa River west of Grandview
Drive.
Things began to pick up after about 9:30 am. At the parking lot, we
watched an immature Cooper's Hawk land nearby, then soar above us.
Along Carling Avenue, across from Rifle Road, we saw (probably) the
same bird on the side of the road with unidentified avian prey .

At Constance Creek from Thomas Dolan Parkway, we got excellent views of
Virginia Rail.

At the Burn Site at Constance Bay, the pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers
were working the trees at the end of the trail.

We took the afternoon off returning to the field at 7:00 pm starting at
the Quarry Ponds off Moodie Drive.
Most of the ducks from the previous week had gone. However, some of the
highlights from this evening were a pair of Spotted Sandpipers, 4
Greater Yellowlegs, a pair of Gadwall, 4 male Ruddy Ducks, and an
immature Greater Snow Goose.
Huge numbers of Canada Geese began arriving around 7:40 pm.
The Greater White-fronted Goose came in at 8:20 pm, revealing itself in
the diminishing light with its unique calls.
Almost 6000 geese covered the pond as we left at 9:00 pm

We then went to the Richmond Lagoons where we heard American Bittern,
Wilson's Snipe and saw American Woodcock.

At the corner of Munster Road and Kettles Road we coaxed a Saw-whet Owl
into view by imitating its call.
