Local highlights of the week included a ROSS'S GOOSE at the Winchester sewage lagoons on the afternoon of May 8th. It was seen heading south with a small group of Canada Geese at approx. 1:15 pm but has not subsequently been reported. Snow Geese also continue to linger extremely late in our area, with 2 at the Embrun lagoons on the 8th, and several hundred observed east of Ottawa along Hwy 417 between Km. 42 and 52 on the 9th. Other good birds included a Black-crowned Night-Heron at Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation Area on the 8th, and a male CERULEAN WARBLER in Gatineau Park on the morning of the 10th at the junction of Trails #1 and #9 between the Champlain Lookout and the Western cabin. A small population has traditionally bred near this location for many years. Fourteen species of shorebirds have now been reported this spring, with the latest addition being a Semipalmated Sandpiper at the Embrun lagoons on the 8th. The Winchester lagoons hosted 7 species on the 8th, including both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, several Spotted Sandpipers, approx. a dozen Least Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin and 6 Wilson's Phalaropes. The 1st report of 3 Common Terns came from Shirley's Bay on the 10th along with 6 Red-necked Grebes. The Wild Turkey of Britannia continues to hang out in the conservation area - it was most recently reported roosting in a tree here on the morning of the 8th. Britannia also continues to be a tried-and-true location for migrant songbirds. The 1st report of Least Flycatcher this season, along with 15 species of warblers have now been reported from this location, the most recent arrivals being Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black- throated Blue, and American Redstart. Several of these expected species have also been reported from Gatineau Park, and the 1st local report of Eastern Wood Pewee was from "The Rockeries" in Rockcliffe Park on the 9th.
