Hi All, Last night while driving home from work in Chatham, I observed a small flock of 5 avocets flying north along County Road #1 (Wheatley Road) between Tilbury and Wheatley. When I saw them they were just north of the white Mennonite Church on the east side of the road.
Also along the same road was a single Upland Sandpiper in the grassy area where road curves back to the south. It was seen less then 150m in on the trail to the right. Efforts to spot the bird this morning so far have not been successful. Further efforts to relocated the female Painted Bunting on South Point Trail have also been unsuccessful, but with the heavy rains last night and rain this morning it is unlikely that these birds have moved to far. This morning some of the early reports have come in with Mourning Warblers, Hooded Warbler, Cerulean Warbler and Yellow-breasted Chat being seen on South Point Trail. On Spicebush there were a fair number of all the regular warbler species and 1 male Hooded Warbler. Now that the rain has stop there will likely be a lot mmore sightings coming in. There has been short periods of light drizzle but essentially no rain and the birding has been excellent! The few reports from the Tip area indicate it was relatively quiet this morning. Most of the early reports of great bird activity have been from Tilden Woods and the Woodland Nature Trail (WNT). These reports indicate there are many warbler species along the WNT. Warblers seen there this morning include Prothonotary, Mourning, Hooded, Canada, Tennessee, Northern Parula, Blue-winged, Northern Waterthrush, and Black-throated Blue. Most of these birds are singing as well. There was also a report of a Kentucky Warbler near #12 and a Prairie Warbler near #18. The Shuster and Tilden Woods Trails provided sightings of Yellow-breasted Chat, Blackburnian, Orange-crowned, Cerulean, Bay-breasted, Chestnut-sided, and Magnolia Warblers. A Wood Thrush was working the first wet area in Tilden Woods. The one Eastern Screech-Owl was still in the Cedar. A Black-billed Cuckoo and a Great Crested Flycatcher were seen from the Boardwalk in Tilden Woods. There have been no reports from more northerly points in the Park.
