I received the message below from Karen Terbush of State Parks regarding
the research and management project being done with Ring-billed Gulls
nesting near the Cave of the Winds Attraction on Goat Island. If you
happen to see any of the marked gulls, please contact Ray or Karen.

*Subject:* Update on Color-marked gulls

Tom - I wanted to let you know so that you can share with BOS members
that we will be making another attempt at color-marking gulls tomorrow -
June 1 at the Cave of the Winds gull colony.

Below is a brief explanation of what we are doing. You are welcome to
use some or all of it to notify members and ask them to report back to us.

Thank you for your continued assistance with this project.

Subject – Color Marked Ring-billed Gulls
As part of a gull research and management project at Niagara Falls State
Park, State Parks staff are color marking Ring-billed Gulls. Eggs are
marked with a red biodegradable dye. When the gulls incubate the eggs,
the dye is transferred to their feathers, bills or feet. Due to direct
and indirect contact with the dye, gulls may be marked on the breast,
belly, wings, head, bill or feet. Marked birds will appear pink in those
areas that have been dyed. Some birds are clearly marked and easy to
observe. Others are more subtly marked.

Part of our research and management project is determining the movement
of gulls beyond the breeding colony. If you see any pink marked gulls
please contact Ray Perry at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or Karen Terbush at

Thank you.
