THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:30 pm, MONDAY JUNE 26, 2006.

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The 1st official week of summer arrived with beautiful weather and
a few interesting bird sightings.

LEAST BITTERNS were observed again in the marshes along the Quebec
side of the Ottawa River east of Gatineau - at least 3 individuals
were flying and hunting in the Marais aux Grenouillettes on the
25th among the very large and active BLACK TERN Colony and other
more common marsh species. Two LEAST BITTERNS and 2 Black-crowned
Night-Herons were in the Marais des Laiches sector on the 21st, 2
adult Black-crowned Night-Herons were at Mud Lake in Britannia on
the 22nd, and 5 of various ages were at Mud Lake the previous day.

A visit to Ramsay Lake along Eardley-Masham Rd. in Gatineau Park
on the 24th produced several regular breeding songbirds and a few
surprises including American Woodcock, a male Wilson's Warbler,
LINCOLN'S SPARROW and an Evening Grosbeak.

Back in Ontario on the 25th, a SANDHILL CRANE was calling and
soaring high over the Mer Bleue boardwalk, and another flew over a
golf course in Manotick today the 26th. The Mer Bleue continues
to host at least 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and an adult PALM WARBLER of
the eastern race. All of these birds were very active and vocal
even at mid-day.

Other noteworthy species included an adult Lesser Yellowlegs at
the St-Isidore sewage lagoons on the 20th, a 3rd-year Lesser
Black-backed Gull and a Bonaparte's Gull at the Deschenes on the
21st, a Northern Mockingbird at the Museum of Civilization on the
19th, and at least 5 SEDGE WRENS singing in the Richmond Fen on
the night of the 24th.

Although it is hard to think of autumn when summer has finally
arrived, this is an opportunity to announce that tickets are now
on sale for the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) Annual
Convention which will be held IN OTTAWA this year. The dates are
September 30 - October 1st, and events include several field
trips, displays, door prizes, dinner and a presentation by world-
famous ornithologist Guy Morrison. All are welcome, and details
can be found on the OFO website at www.ofo.ca

Thank you - Good Birding!
