Just a quick note to confirm that the Dickcissel is still at the same
location. The haying operation is continuing today with raking in
preparation for bailing. The north field is likely to be cut quite soon and
the Dickcissel will have to move on ..... some has already been cut, bailed
and removed.
Regarding today's sighting, I was very lucky. When I arrived and got out of
the vehicle, I scanned the wires on the west side of the road ... they were
bare. I then scanned the wires on the east side, south of the farm and saw
and heard a Savannah. I turned around and scanned the wires on the west
side again and spotted a bird on the wires between the poles about 2 poles
north of the driveway. I walked toward it and heard the distinctive song
before I could even see the bird clearly. I continued on up the road and
got directly under the Dickcissel and it continued singing. All of this
happened within 2 minutes of my arrival..... usually, when I am looking for
accidentals, everyone else has seen the species and it has just left never
to return again!!!!!
I watched and listened to it for about 5 minutes and it then flew east to
the uncut part of the northeast hay field.
Good birding....... Bruce

G'Day Birders, This morning while out for a bike ride my wife and I =
identified a Carolina Wren singing on the floodplain of the Beaver River =
adjacent to Victoria Street. This is a well vegetated area with mature =
trees. This finding make us very happy as we had a wren visiting our =
suet feeders all winter (sorry we didn't report it here due to access =
issues). This is the first sighting since early April which coincided =
with Sharp-shinned Hawk kills in our yard (one of which was a =
spectacular European Starling kill which lasted >2 hours). I'm glad that =
the wren made it out of here alive.

location on Victoria St. =

Beaverton is about 50 minutes north of Whitby following hwy. 12 or 70
minutes north-east of Toronto following the 404 to Davis Drive east then =
hwy
48 north to Durham 23. Once in Beaverton turn left on Simcoe St., take =
the first right on Mara Rd., then first left on Victoria St., drive =
about 200m down the street on the left side.

Hi Everyone
Today, July 9, 2006 birded both Chaffeys Lock and Amherst Island. There
was lots of activity along Chaffeys Lock Road and Opinicon Road including 6
Cerulean Warbler, 1 Golden-winged Warbler, 9 Yellow-throated Vireo, 1
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and 1 male Prairie Warbler singing near the corner of
Indian Lake Road and Opinicon Road. On Amherst Island there was a nice
concentration of shorebirds at the eastern end of the island, K.F.N.
property. Highlights included 1 adult Stilt Sandpiper, 1 adult Baird's
Sandpiper, 1 adult Short-billed Dogwatches and 19 Wilson's Phalaropes, with
at least 14 juvs. At the gravel bar 32 Caspian Terns were observed resting.
good birding

Directions: Chaffeys Lock/Opinicon Road: Opinicon Road is north of
Kingston. From Hwy. 401 take county road 10 (exit 617) north towards
Westport for about 20 kilometres. Roughly 1 or 2 kms. past Perth Road
Village on the right is Opinicon Road. Turn right and drive towards
Chaffeys Lock making regular stops along the way to listen. Anywhere
along Opinicon Road is can be good. The old railway line or the Rideau
Trail system opposite Skycroft Campgrounds are great for birding .
Amherst Island: Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Road 4, Camden East)
and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and
drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The
ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the
island on the hour. Cost is $6.00 round trip. There are no gas stations on
the island.
There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock.
The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island on the
east side of the Lower Forty Foot Road.
