A homeowner in Port Colborne has reported a male Rufous Hummingbird at her
upstairs balcony feeder. First found by her yesterday, the bird was present
today and appears to be an adult male bird. It has been aggressively chasing
the all the Ruby-throats away from this balcony feeder that it appears to
favour. The bird as well, spends considerable time in an adjacent tree just to
the right side of the house.

While the bird is on private property, the homeowners are 'birder friendly' and
birders are welcome to visit.

A few rules....the road is VERY narrow, do not park anywhere that will obstruct
other passing vehicles or neighbours driveways. Please do not park in their
driveway, it is a joint driveway and rather steep. There is a small cemetery
across the road with limited parking. Birders are NOT to visit before 0800
hours as the feeder on the second floor balcony is off their bedroom. Numerous
binoculars and scopes directed to this area earlier than 0800 would be
inappropriate.

Birders have the homeowners permission to walk up their driveway (go to the
house to the left) and stay on the grassy area at the top of this steep
driveway. Please DO NOT go closer, the bird can easily be seen from the grassy
area, and the homeowners do not want the bird stressed in any way.

The address is 735 Lakeshore Road East, Port Colborne, ON.

DIRECTIONS:
Coming from Toronto, Hamilton, St. Catharines, take the QEW Niagara bound to
Highway 406 just before you reach St. Catharines. Take the 406 south all the
way to the end where it T's on to Main Street E. in Welland. At the lights
here, turn left, go under the tunnel (Welland Canal) to the next set of lights.
Now turn right onto Highway 140, and drive some 5-6 miles to Highway 3. Turn
left on 3 and go less than a mile to Lorraine Road. Turn right here and go to
the last road before the lake (Lake Erie) and turn right onto Lakeshore Road E.
Number 735 will be a quarter mile down the road on your left side, and
opposite the cemetery.

Coming from Niagara Falls, or Buffalo: from Fort Erie, take Highway 3 south
some 10-12 miles (just past the big bend in the highway at Gastown) to Lorraine
Road. Then follow as above.

Good luck to all that go.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Bronte Harbour Red-necked Grebes & Bufflehead

As of this evening the Red-necked Grebe nest in Bronte Harbour was abandoned
with one soiled egg visible. Both parents and the chick were nearby. The chick
is approaching adult size but still has a striped face.

The surprise of the walk was a male Bufflehead, possibly a new bird for my life
July list, if I had one.

Caspian Terns flying back to Hamilton, fish in mouth were common. There was at
least one juvenile Caspian Tern.

The Cliff Swallow colony at the Lighthouse Restaurant is still active.

Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Road (Oakville) and go to the lake.
