Hi to day with the hi heat I desired to do some butterflying out on Tommy Thompson park ( but you must go to http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/index.php?sid=af88f60ca14959d7db76a28a64b84ca3 to see that report ) but some of the good summer birds ( and I keep this list short so not to look like spam ) wear Mocking bird 1 , Black Bilied Cuckoo 2 , Great blue Heron 4 , Great Egret 7 ( all seen at one time ) WOW. well worth the walk in the hi heat . Is it just me or have Least Flycatchers become relatively uncommon in southern Ontario in the last couple of years? Hardly saw any at Pelee this spring compared to other years and didn't had one in my travels in Durham or southern Victoria this summer or last. This is Chris Lewis reporting. In spite of the recent heat wave, some post-breeding movement was observed over the past week. A GREAT EGRET was seen in a stormwater management pond on the east side of Eagleson Rd. at Bridlewood in the south end of Kanata on the 11th, and on the 15th an adult and 2 juvenile LEAST BITTERNS were seen at the bridge over Constance Creek along Thomas Dolan Parkway. A somewhat early WHIMBREL was heard flying over the Carlington area on the evening of the 15th. The water level on the Ottawa River has already begun to rapidly decrease, exposing more feeding habitat for migrant shorebirds. From the 14th through the 16th, 6 species were seen here including 3 Killdeer, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 26 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Solitary Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers and 1 Least Sandpiper. All of these birds were adults. At the east end of Andrew Haydon Park, a small number of Lesser Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers were also noted on the 15th and 16th. Land-birds of interest were 3 fledged young and 4 adult Red-headed Woodpeckers near the nesting site in the old burn area along Whistler St. in Constance Bay, and a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER along the Shirley's Bay causeway on the 14th. Today the 16th was the 1st official day of the downtown PEREGRINE FALCON Watch. For more information including volunteering for the watch, please visit the OFNC web site at www.ofnc.ca Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
