Good afternoon=20
This morning I was fortunate in that I believed the weather report of a =
sunny day with cloudy periods and caught the 5:30 am bus and headed down =
to The Spit to start my now to June visits and because I did put my =
faith in the always accurate :-) weather forecasts I fell into it again =
and came out smelling like the Sweat Clover that has filled The Spit =
this year.
At 9:21 am this morning while looking at some juvenile Baltimore =
Orioles on Peninsula D the Orioles and Robins and Cedar Waxwings all =
took flight. I looked up expecting a Red-tailed Hawk or some such bird =
but to my surprise a Juvenile Black Vulture came into view and circled =
over me just above the trees for about a half a minute. Long and low =
enough for me to note the dull looking plumage and the black bill.
The bird then moved off and circled Peninsula C for about another half =
minute putting up some of the Cormorants and Gulls in the area and it =
then moved further west and out of my sight. (Rare enough for you Acorn =
?).
I also noted 450+ Tree Swallows, 250+ Barn Swallows and 250+ Bank =
Swallows milling and feeding between The Base and Peninsula D with most =
near the second gate on The Base. The usual pre migration staging but =
this time they chose The Spit on a day they could be observed. =
Red-winged Blackbirds have also gathered in (small) flocks on The Spit.
I only birded about 1/3 of The Spit before I was rained out but all =
other birds were the usual suspects and the growth of foliage is =
phenomenal down there.
Directions
LESLIE STREET SPIT (TOMMY THOMPSON PARK) IN TORONTO
To get to "The Spit" from Queen & Yonge Sts. Take the Queen Street Car =
#501 east to Leslie St. and walk south (about 2 km) or as far as you can =
go on Leslie St. at Unwin Ave. and you will see the gate and signage. =
You may also catch the Jones Bus #83 at the Donlands Subway Station or =
transfer to it at Queen St. and Jones Ave. and take it to Leslie St. And =
Commissioner St. (on Saturday only). By automobile you may drive to =
Lakeshore Blvd and Leslie St. then south to The Spit.
If before 9 am you can park either on Leslie St. or Unwin Ave., after 9 =
am the parking lot inside the gate is open, be sure to note the closing =
time as your car will be locked in at that time. =96 6 pm at present.
Be also aware that there are many Red Ants on The Spit. They got me =
today.

I dropped into Townsend's sewage lagoons around 12:30 today for about an
hour and half and was treated with a good variety of shorebirds. In
between the rain I had the following;
40 Killdeer (adults and juveniles)
11 Semipalmated Plovers
1 Greater Yellowlegs
4 Lesser Yellowlegs
20 Solitary Sandpipers
40 Spotted Sandpipers (adults and juveniles)
1 Ruddy Turnstone
12 Pectoral Sandpipers
250 Semipalmated Sandpipers
200 Least Sandpipers
3 Short-billed Dowitchers (hendersoni)
Townsend's Sewage Lagoon can be reached by taking 403 Hamilton to
Highway 6 south to Jarvis. Turn west at Highway 3 and then north on
County Rd 69. Take the first road on your left, travel about 500m and
the lagoons are on the right.

Greetings, Ontbirders. I'm still quite amateur at hardcore birding, =
so I apologize if anyone finds this report to be trivial, but I'm quite =
excited by the sighting.
Around 11:30 this morning I was doing some casual birding in Woodland =
Park, in the north end of the Rouge Valley, where I've been taking walks =
for many years. Today I spotted a beautiful male Indigo Bunting, my =
first solo Indigo Bunting sighting. Darn, and here I am without my =
camera. I could also hear another Indigo Bunting nearby, and sure =
enough within a few minutes he was joined by a female. I observed them =
for a short while, trying to determine if there may be a nest nearby. I =
lost sight of the female, but the male kept a close watch on me, and he =
seemed agitated, so after about 10 or 15 minutes I thought it prudent to =
move on. I was actually 'escorted' by the male until I was safely out =
of his territory.
About half an hour later, and further into the park, I came upon =
another male Indigo Bunting. This one was far enough away from the =
first that I'm pretty certain it was not the same male I'd seen before. =
No sign of a female this time, but I didn't wait around too long... it =
was starting to rain pretty heavily.
Other sightings included not only the usual American Goldfinches, =
American Robins, Blue Jays, American Crows, Eastern Kingbirds, and a =
pair of Northern Cardinals, but also a Belted Kingfisher, and a number =
of Sparrows(?) I couldn't quite identify.
Woodland Park is located at Reesor Rd. and Steeles Ave. E. in =
northeast Scarborough, and is operated (I think) by the Toronto Regional =
Conservation Authority.
Directions (the scenic route):
a.. Take Highway 401 to Morningside Drive (in Scarborough).
b.. Go north on Morningside to Old Finch Ave. (*NOT* regular Finch =
Ave. If you go under a bridge, you've gone a bit too far north.)
c.. Turn right (east) onto Old Finch. Past the residential area, Old =
Finch curves to the left (north) and goes down a hill, at the bottom of =
which YOU NEED TO TURN RIGHT (east) to stay on Old Finch. If you've =
stayed on Old Finch correctly, you'll then go over a noisy steel-grate =
single-lane bridge controlled by a stop light.
d.. Beyond that bridge, Old Finch goes back uphill. Once you crest =
that hill, take the first left turn (north) onto Reesor Rd.
e.. Go north on Reesor Rd. past two railroad crossings. Woodland Park =
is on your right, before you get to Steeles Ave. E.
Directions (the not-scenic route):
a.. Take Highway 401 to Markham Rd. (in Scarborough).
b.. Go north on Markham Rd. to Steeles Ave E.
c.. Turn right (east) onto Steeles Ave E. Stay on Steeles beyond =
Tapscott, Staines, Littles, and Sewells Rds, then turn right (south) =
onto Reesor Rd. Woodland park is immediately on your left.
