Hello Ontbirds people, Yesterday 25 July, I received a message to the Ottawa Bird Status Line from Gillian Marston re: a very interesting observation she had on 23 July. I spoke with Gillian today, and received more information. With her permission, I am posting the following:
On the morning of 23 July, at Voyageur Provincial Park (eastern Ontario, along the Ottawa River, immediately west of the Ontario / Quebec border), Gillian had very good looks at an adult WORM-EATING WARBLER, foraging for insect larvae in a scrubby tree. She stated that she know this was unusual, but was not aware of its status as a rarity in eastern Ontario until she returned home after the weekend. The location of the bird was the Portage campground, at the back of the camping area, in a brushy wooded area by an old (disused) equestrian centre. Unfortunately she was not able to obtain photographs, but she notified Park Staff about this sighting, and would be very interested to know if this bird was seen by others, or if it is seen again. She can be contacted at her home phone # 613-825-7248, or by e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would also appreciate comments or any further sightings. As far as I know, this is the farthest NE record of this species in eastern Ontario, and a 1st record for July. I can be contacted at [EMAIL PROTECTED] DIRECTIONS TO VOYAGEUR PROVINCIAL PARK: >From Ottawa, take Hwy 417 east to exit #5, then north on Hwy 4 to the Park entrance. A map of the Park's trails and campgrounds should be available at the Park office. Good birds to all! Chris Lewis Ottawa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
