I checked the lagoons this evening, and although hot enough to want to go
swimming, but having left my bathing suit at home, I settled for getting
good looks at the Eared Grebe in Exeter.. This bird was in the second cell,
at the north end of the cell, hanging out with some Ruddy ducks. This grebe
is well on his way to non-breeding plumage...

Although posted, the lagoons are accessible with a free Access Permit which
you should display on your dashboard while visiting. (As I have noticed OPP
cars checking my truck, in the past)... Permits are available from the Town
Office, inside the library building at the corner of Main and Sanders St,
during normal business hours.

The lagoons are west from the north end of town, off highway 83 (Thames Rd).
Turn south at the first Mile and 1/4 which is Airport Line Rd (at the
cemetery). Drive to the second gate on the left and park, not blocking the
entrance... Walk in, see the bird and enjoy the sunset....

Good Birding,

On Thursday, August 3rd, 2006, this is the HNC birding report:

Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Turkey Vulture
Wood Duck
Blue-winged Teal
Osprey
Killdeer
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Solitary Sandpiper
Spotted Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper
Short-billed Dowitcher
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Great Horned Owl
Yellow-throated Vireo

Quiet again here in the Hamilton Study area this week, too hot to bird
(didn't think there was such an excuse!). The cold front moving through now
should pick things up again.

Shorebird reports this week come from Dry Lake which is on Dry Lake Road
down near Hagersville and Clanbrassil in the south part of the Hamilton
Study Area (best found by a map book). Here water levels are down with mud
exposed. In the lake this week were Great Blue Heron, many Wood Ducks,
Killdeer, Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted and Least Sandpiper, along
with one Short-billed Dowitcher. This could be a productive spot over the
next few weeks should water levels remain this way. On the return on 4th
Line near Hagersville, 140 plus Turkey Vultures were circling over a field,
amazing sight even for Turkey Vultures. No Blacks unfortunately, I checked
thoroughly!!!

Water levels are up at Grimsby Sewage Lagoons and Smithville Sewage Lagoons
with a Lesser Yellowlegs appearing as a Phalarope as it swam around the back
cell. Also seen here were Least, Solitary and Spotted Sandpiper along with
Blue-winged Teal. Near the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons down Kelson Road a Great
Horned Owl has been heard hooting during the day.

The storm ponds on North Service Road at Guelph Line had a couple of Lesser
Yellowlegs, again with high water here and last Friday at the storm ponds on
the 407 at the 403 a Great Egret and Greater Yellowlegs were seen here at
110 kph.

In the odds & sods, six Osprey were seen this week traveling high over the
city of Hamilton in the Dundurn Park area. In the Westdale Forest this week
a Yellow-throated Vireo was seen and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo was seen up in
Saltfleet on the trail between 10th and 11th Road East.

That's the news for the week, keep reporting your sightings and enjoy the
long weekend!!!
