This is Chris Lewis reporting. A dramatic increase in the water level of the Ottawa River since last week, due to recent heavy rains and water control at the Chats Falls Dam above Fitzroy Harbour, caused a bit of disappointment for shorebird watchers. The previously extensive mudflats west of the Shirley's Bay causeway are now extensively flooded, and there were virtually no birds here on August 4th other than common puddle ducks, Canada Geese, 2 adult Spotted Sandpipers and a single Common Tern. High water on some of our local sewage lagoons, including Almonte in the west and Alfred in the east, also provided poor shorebird habitat, but fortunately good for waterfowl. At Alfred on the 5th there were 2 families of Redhead, 1 male Lesser Scaup and 101 RUDDY DUCKS including many young. A small number of shorebirds including Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary and Least Sandpipers were in a wet field near the Alfred lagoons, but the most interesting recent report came from the Casselman lagoons where 3 juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen on the 1st. A GREAT EGRET was seen again at the large quarry pond on the east side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on July 31st, and 3 GREAT EGRETS flew northeast over Bowesville and Leitrim Rds. on the morning of the 6th. Two Sandhill Cranes, previously reported from the Christie Lake Rd. near DeWitt's Corners were still present here on the 3rd, and there were several reports of Common Moorhens in the marshes along the Jack Pine Trail off Moodie Drive over the past week. On the 6th the Carp Hills along Thomas Dolan Parkway west of Dunrobin were productive for 10 species of warblers including a juvenile Mourning Warbler. Also seen in this area were a Red- shouldered Hawk and a juvenile Eastern Towhee. Farther west of the Carp Hills along Torbolton Ridge Rd. SEDGE WRENS were heard again in the large sedge meadow by the railroad tracks near house # 4104 on the 4th, and 5 Red-headed Woodpeckers including 1 juvenile were seen at the "old burn area" along Whistler St. in Constance Bay on the 6th. Back on the 29th, a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was reported from the Trans Canada Trail in the Kanata area of the Stoney Swamp. And finally, a Northern Bobwhite, most likely an escaped bird, was seen for approx. 3 weeks in a backyard in Osgoode south of Ottawa, at the corner of Logan Farm Dr. and Lombardy St. This observation was reported on July 30th.
