THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:00 PM, MONDAY AUGUST 28, 2006.

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A very active week for migration prompts another update from
Ottawa. Warblers were the top story in the past few days, with 24
species now reported mainly from the Britannia Conservation Area
since the 25th. The discovery of a female or immature Cerulean
Warbler at Shirley's Bay wood's on the 27th enhances this
excellent total, and the only "expected" species still to be
reported this season are Orange-crowned and Mourning. Also at
Britannia on the 25th were an adult Red-shouldered Hawk, a very
cooperative Olive-sided Flycatcher and 4 species of vireos
including Blue-headed and Philadelphia. On the 27th at Britannia
highlights in the rain included 13 species of warblers, a Green
Heron, an immature Cooper's Hawk....and 2 River Otters, and adult
and a juvenile, catching catfish in Mud Lake. A Great Egret and a
Black Tern were at Shirley's Bay the same day.

The local shorebird total is now 19 species for the month of
August, with American Woodcock added to the previous list of 18.
The water on the Ottawa River has risen again, with few shorebirds
at Shirley's Bay on the 27th but there is still good habitat at
Andrew Haydon Park. At the large quarry pond on the east side of
Moodie Dr south of Trail Rd on the 27th, there were 2 Great Egrets
and increasing numbers of Ring-necked Ducks, a few Lesser Scaup,
and 46 Pied-billed Grebes as well as 10 Stilt Sandpipers. On the
25th a Ruddy Turnstone was at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park
and 6 Short-billed Dowitchers were on the west side of the
Shirley's Bay causeway.

Peregrine Falcon sightings included an adult feeding on a gull
carcass at Fallowfield Rd. near Richmond Rd and an immature bird
unsuccessfully hunting Green-winged Teal at Shirley's Bay; both
were seen on the 27th. On the evening of the 26th, approx. 20
Common Nighthawks were seen flying over the Britannia area, and on
the 24th, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were observed in the
Deschenes Rapids and another was in a field near Carling and Rifle
Rds.

There have been no recent reports of the LITTLE BLUE HERON at the
High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman.

Thank you - Good Birding!
