Over 6 hours I was fortunate to have many top-notch identifiers and counters at
Cranberry on Sep.20-- the lakefront thermals, medium NW winds, 17C, and rising
BP were combining factors that brought in wonderful-to-see kettles of
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, TOTALLING 658, along with 30 Turkey Vultures, 119
Sharp-shinneds, 189 low-flying Kestrels AND, yes, a few of us saw a 1pm very
high IMM. BALD EAGLE.
Observation time--9am to 2pm
Counters--Dennis Barry, Ron Pittaway, Geoff Carpentier, Doug Lockrey
Observers--Jean Iron, Dan Kaczynski, Gerry Ball, Jim Larkin ,Donna Foster,

Our first BROWN THRASHER stayed all morning. Other songbirds-Golden-crowned

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 9:30 pm, MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2006
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
A quiet week for Ottawa area bird reports, but there are several
signs that the season is advancing. Several reports of Snow Geese
have come in since September 7th, with a few seen at Shirley's Bay
on the 15th and 2 seen on the 16th feeding in a cornfield with
Canada Geese along Hwy 416 near the Bankfield Rd. exit. American
Golden Plovers have been new arrivals since the 8th; 2 were at
Shirley's Bay on the 15th and another pair was at the west end of
Andrew Haydon Park the next day. Also at Shirley's Bay on the
15th were 1 White-rumped and 1 Stilt Sandpiper and 2 Short-billed
Dowitchers.
Passerine migration continues to move along, with 13 species of
warblers including Orange-crowned, as well as several Blue-headed
Vireos, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Scarlet Tanagers noted in the
Britannia Conservation Area on the 15th. American Pipits and
Rusty Blackbirds have also been reported moving through at various
locations since the 7th.
And now a couple of notices about upcoming events:
