Of late I have to spend much time at the hospital--my wife in a very dangerous
situation, unable to stand/walk, et al.
I figured I would open up the watch this Saturday AM, "knowing that help would
arrive"---I left at 0930 real-time, having witnessed a 1st yr. N.GOSHAWK fly
low toward me, then zoom in on the perched owl-mount, and I am sure there were
distant hawks to the north, but I did not have my scope, and I had no help.
Later I came back to pick up the page-it indicated only 3 others came to help.
Fairly strong W-NW winds, rising BP usually bring help out, but not today.

Although cold and windy, a wonderful day to be out and about... The day
started with a Goshawk flying through the backyard this morning. Later this
afternoon at the lagoons in Exeter, there was a juvenile Red Necked
Phalarope in the south east corner of the second cell in. Also at the 'goons
were Canvasback, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Redhead, hundreds of
Ruddy ducks, Am Pipits, Tree Swallows, Juncos... Later at Grand Bend
lagoons, after a pit stop at Timmy's, was a group of 9 female Scoter species
that I am fairly certain were SURF SCOTERS... Also at Grand Bend were Wood
Duck, PINTAIL, Bufflehead, Redhead, Canvasback, White Crowned Sparrows,
Pipits, Lesser Scaup, Am Widgeon, Black Duck, RingNecked Duck, Ruddys, Coot,
PiedBilled Grebe, Red Breasted Merganser, and Bonepartes Gulls.
Exeter lagoons are west of town, south on Airport Line and Grand Bend
lagoons are east of Grand Bend off 21 highway on Mollard line.... Keep in
mind the upcoming OFO outing to the Grand Bend area, led by Maris Apse....

Today I observed my first Northern Shrike of the season, and with the
weather so blustery it seemed to fit the "winter" feel of things. I was also
nearly involved in a collision with a Sharp-shinned Hawk in my own yard as it
dashed after a Mourning Dove. No doubt it (or another) will set up winter
residence here as they have done every other year. The shrike was on the hydro
wires just east of the corner of the 3rd Line of Innisfill Twshp. at the 20th
S.R. east of Hwy. 11 south of Lefroy.

Weather:
Today saw mostly sunny conditions with brisk winds predominately from the
west.
Raptor Observations:
The flight today was much improved over recent days with a more or less
steady flow of birds all day long. Predictably the movement was dominated
by the vultures but there was a nice mix of birds overall and much of the
flight was directly overhead. With the strong winds for much of the day,
most birds were also low, many at treetop level even.
Non-raptor Observations:
Highlights noted from the non-raptor migration included about half a dozen
Chimney Swifts and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
