Hello Ontbirders
Thankfully, today was milder than recent days.
This morning at Andrew Hayden Park/Dick Bell Park conditions were ideal
for viewing distant birds.
Way out in Lac Deschenes there was a flock of about 55 Black Scoters
(including several adult males), about 10 Surf Scoter (half adult
males) and one Greater Scaup.
Nearer to shore were good numbers of Lesser Scaup with a sprinkling of
Common Goldeneye, White-winged Scoter, Surf Scoter, Greater Scaup, 1
Red-necked Grebe and 1 Long-tailed Duck.
All three merganser species were in the east pond of Andrew Hayden Park.
Late lingerers included 1 Common Tern and 1 Double-crested Cormorant.
Most interesting was a flyby of 2 Red-throated Loons, 3 Common Loons
and two flocks of Brant (40 & 9).
Around noon, at the Quarry Ponds off Moodie, there was 1 Blue Goose and
one very tiny dark Cackling Goose.
Later this afternoon, at the Quarry Ponds, in addition to birds seen
recently, I had the following:
5 Greater Snow Geese, including one Blue Morph
3 Lesser Snow Geese, including one juvenile
5 Cackling Geese, including the tiny dark individual.
The Greater White-fronted Goose was in a farm field north of Brophy,
between Twin Elm and Moodie.
