Hello Ontbirders

At 9:30am this morning, a Short-eared Owl was seen flying southward, very high over Ottawa Beach. Directions courtesy Neily World: http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/orwo13.htm

In a field south of the corner of Bankfield/Brophy and Moodie Drive there were 3 Greater White-fronted Geese. Also present was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and a leucistic Canada Goose. There were 5 Richardson's Cackling Geese at this location yesterday evening.
Often, best views for all the above were from 3rd Line, south of Brophy.

Thanks to information received from Chris Lewis and Bob Bracken, an American Three-toed Woodpecker was found this morning by Dave Moore along the trail off Kerwin Road. At about 1:00pm, I got to see a male working a tree trunk on the left, about 40 metres in from the trail entrance. Directions courtesy Neily World: http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/dun4.htm

Hello Ontbirders,

This morning Dave Moore and I found a male American Three-toed Woodpecker along the trail off Kerwin Rd. in west Ottawa. See below for directions to the site. We heard then saw the bird about 20m in from the trail entrance, about 6 m up in a spruce tree on the north side of the trail. It then flew deeper into the woods. (It was tapping fairly loudly. I expected to see a Hairy Woodpecker.)

Perhaps also of interest today:
- two light phase Rough-legged Hawks flying over (SSE) the corner of Brophy Rd. (formerly Bankfield) and Third Line near Richmond. - three or four female Purple Finches apparently moving around with a flock of House Finches in the woods and on the ridge at the Britannia Conservation Area (see below for directions.)

Regards,

Bev McBride

Directions:

Kerwin Rd. Trail (from Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club website): Travel west from Ottawa on Highway 417, exiting at Eagleson/March Road (exit #138). Keep right and follow the March Road signs. Continue up March Road through "Silicon Valley North," past the flashing light at South March, to the next traffic light which is Dunrobin Road. Turn right, and go approximately 1 km to the McEwen Gas Station on your right. Just past the gas station, turn right onto Kerwin Road (Formerly River Road). The Kerwin/Riddell Trail is on the right (east) and begins immediately opposite the residence at 881 River Road. This is approximately 1.5 km from Dunrobin Road.
