Birders,
While at Blenheim Sewage Lagoons I noticed a significant raptor movement
well to the north just before 1300h. One of the first birds I focused on
was a "Western" Red-tailed Hawk (dark ad.). At the same time there was also
a "getting late" Osprey. There were several other more common raptors over
the half hour I stood watching. I post this notice in case one of the hawk
watches might have observed this western bird today.
Water level is high at the lagoons. Only one Greater Yellowlegs in pond 5,
and a single Dunlin looking for a spot to land. Lots of ducks though.
At Rondeau Park, there were surprisingly very few birds. Virtually no
warblers except one Orange-crowned and one Nashville in the campground. No
Yellow-rumped Warblers! Fox Sparrows were quite numerous though.
Lagoon Directions: Exit 401 at #90 (Communications Rd.) and head into
Blenheim. At the main stoplight turn right (west) onto Rd. 3. Travel about
1.5 km and turn right (north) onto Lagoon Rd. at the carwash, and continue
north about 1 km to gate. You must have an annual permit to enter.
Available at the Municipal Service Centre, 35 Talbot St. in Blenheim,
during business hours, fax (519) 676-0244.
