Hi all. This afternoon the Harlequin Duck sighted by Bruce Di Labio a few
days ago was still at the top of the rapids of the Ottawa River near
Pembroke, at Morrison Island. Added bonus: 7 Long-tailed Ducks were diving
in the same area. There were approximately Common 100 Goldeneyes and
Buffleheads around, diving and flying all the time, making an exact count a
good challenge.
Directions: from Ottawa, take the Queensway west towards Pembroke. Turn
right at the first exit to Pembroke on road 40. Follow up to the turn off
to Quebec, turning right. Once past the big bridge, you will be on Morrison
Island. Turn left on the only road you'll see; no name is posted. Go to
the end of that dirt road, veer right where it forks. At the end of it
there is only one house (#31). Ask permission to the owner, a very nice man
accustomed to bird watchers coming to inspect bird life on the river. If
there is nobody there, take your chance walking down to the bushy shore,
where his trailer is parked. The above mentioned waterfowl was observed
straight accross from there, and toward the rapids.
Note: Decent spotting scope definitely an asset.
