The Razorbill was viewed by a number of observers from the
northwestern end of Fort Niagara, NY within the Fort, while
simultaneously being viewed by D'Anna, Potter et al from
Niag.-on-the-Lake, ON. Bird spent most of its time actively
diving in the rough white-capped current and just beyond, on
the Canadian side of river mouth, during the observation period
of about 10:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. About 12:30 p.m. the bird
took off to the east and continued on to the American side,
circling a bit, and then finally landing about 500 or so yards
east of the mouth of the River. To those viewing from the
Fort on US side, Toronto skyline was in background. Unfortunately
searching in that area for the next 10 or so minutes did not
turn up the bird - perhaps dove/swam out further on lake,
or perhaps back west toward River mouth. Observers
though were splitting up at the time, but more were coming
in as we were leaving.

Hints would be to scan as much as you can, and be
patient - bird spent most of its time underwater and then
would reappear at surface for only brief bouts (about 10-20 seconds)
before disappearing again, and then sometimes would not
be relocated for another 15 or so minutes. Beware as there
are SEVERAL distant Red-throated Loons and Horned Grebes
present that can cause confusion, although you will know the
real thing when you see it:)

Good luck!

At 12:21 on Nov.19 the observers at the Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch
"celebrated" when migratory hawk #8000 for the 2006 year came through. The
day "featured" a continuous medium N wind, along with a steady BP and a
TUV=2; yes, it was c-c-cold, but I thank the 20 or more visitors/observers
who came to help at the platform. The aforementioned weather conditions
suggested a "good" hawk flight--after the first 2 hours we were sceptical,
but then we were rewarded with a distant juv. Golden Eagle (10:35) and the
challenge to decide which of the Rough-leggeds seen were going to hang
around!-- on 2 occasions this was decided when the "resident" dark-morph
territorial RL took on a light-morph RL, the latter "losing". We counted 2
light and 4 dark-morph RLs, along with 35 Red-taileds. Early in the day a
Red-tailed chased a recently-arrived Peregrine Falcon out of a tree.
As many as 20 Common Loons and 3 Red-throated Loons were noted. Other
non-raptors included American Coot, Bonaparte's Gull, adult N.Shrike, Belted
Kingfisher, Red-breasted Nuthatch.
>
Another plea to photographers--if you intend to come down before and after
the
CMRW closes down, please bring bird feed (bear in mind that the large
garbage pail will be removed on Nov.30)

 Nov.19-- 6 hrs.; N wind; steady BP; TUV=2; 0-4C
