Hello Ontbirds people, I was told today by a birding acquaintace that an adult male HARLEQUIN DUCK was reported to ONTBIRDS yesterday (Nov. 25). I searched my "deleted items" folder but could not find any record of such a posting, so my apologies if I overlooked something.
Nevertheless, the good news is....the bird was still present today (Nov. 26)!! It was seen by several observers from ~ 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM and will hopefully linger. It was riding the waves in the Deschenes rapids and was readily seen from the Britannia Yacht Club as well as "Britannia Point" (the gravel boat launch area behind the Britannia Water Purification Plant). Also noteworthy was a Red-throated Loon below the rapids, seen from Britannia Point this morning as well. DIRECTIONS: >From Hwy 417 in Ottawa, take exit 129 north onto Pinecrest Rd. then turn right (east) onto Richmond Rd. After Richmond crosses Carling Ave, turn left (north) onto Poulin Ave which eventually leads to Britannia Rd. Turn right (north) on Britannia which ends at Cassels St. Turn left (west) on Cassels and look for the entrance to the Britannia Yacht Club. You may park in the parking lot and walk east up the driveway to the vantage over the rapids at the northeast end of the marina. To check the river from "Britannia Point", turn right (east) on Cassels and (keeping left) drive past the water purification plant until the end. Please do NOT park in the parking lot beyond the fence, as this for the municipal staff. There is usually room to park along the road near the boat launch. Good birding!
